The RBC stopover at Plymouth

We were set to go with a total of 55 boats expected, the 23 boats with the Round Britain fleet and just over 30 local ones and a fine selection too (see RBC Plymouth Visitors (pdf)).  We were all ready and then the weather went wild !

The RBC boats came in from Monday 6th May with tales of nasty seas the last getting in at 4am on Saturday .  A parade of sail had been organised for the morning of Thursday but with gales forecast we postponed this until a possible weather window on Saturday morning.  Then with wind speeds through the marina, which had some protection from the full force recorded at over 30 knots, we postponed the parade until Sunday morning  as the weather was expected to deteriorate again in the afternoon .  But we had a parade with a sail in a gentle force 3 across the Sound with just the 10 boats which ventured out.  Some of them carried on out to sea and slogged their way to Fowey where they are still.

Many of the local boats went home after the first postponement others after the second.  A small hard core stayed on with part of the RBC fleet which was hoping for a weather window later.  I am afraid they are still in Plymouth waiting for it as I write this on Tuesday 14th.

So it might seem like a disaster but in fact it was far from it.  The Mayflower Marina staff couldn’t do enough to help and their facilities proved excellent as was the case at Jolly Jacks which dispensed vitality in the form of really good food, ales and entertainment and with the congenial company of like minded gaffers we had a pretty good time.  Wednesday night saw 155 people dining on quality fish and chips followed by crumble and custard at Jacks and a loud buzz of conversation mixed with shanties from the Tavy Tars which carried on till late.
